Interior, Exterior & Basement French Drains Kentucky

A French drain needs a water source to collect and a suitable place to discharge. A gravel trench or buried pipe alone is not a complete plan. Phoenix evaluates how water reaches your property, where it collects, and how a drainage system could move it away.

Which type of drain are you discussing?

      SystemTypical purposeKey design question
Exterior French drainIntercept subsurface water outsideCan the location, elevation, and outlet manage the intended water?
Interior crawlspace drainCollect water within the crawlspaceHow will water reach the collection system and leave the building?
Basement perimeter drainCollect water at a planned interior perimeter locationHow will the drain connect to a sump or other suitable outlet?

“Basement French drain” is a common search term, but installed products and methods vary. Ask the contractor to describe the actual system, not just its name.

Exterior drainage: begin with the lot

We examine runoff paths, grade, downspouts, existing drains, and where water appears during rain. Surface water may need grading, a catch basin, or a separate solid conveyance line rather than relying on a subsurface French drain. Roof water and subsurface collection should be routed according to the design.

Utilities, footing support, excavation access, soil, and a suitable lawful discharge route affect feasibility. Depth, pipe selection, filtration, aggregate, and slope are site decisions; we do not prescribe one trench size for every property.

Interior and basement drains: collection needs an exit

An interior system manages water after it reaches the collection area. The proposal should explain the collection path, sump or gravity outlet, wall-water management where needed, and how finished surfaces will be restored. Concrete cutting or excavation near a foundation requires a site-specific plan.

If a pump is used, discuss power, discharge, service access, alarms, and backup options. Backup features reduce some failure risks but cannot guarantee uninterrupted performance under every condition.

What to ask before approving the estimate

      • What water pathway is this system intended to address?
      • Where will the collected water go?
      • What utilities, permits, or access constraints affect the work?
      • What cleaning or maintenance access is included?
      • Which excavation, concrete, landscaping, and cleanup items are included?

Will a French drain fix every wet basement?

No. Plumbing leaks, cracks, surface runoff, groundwater, and condensation need different responses. An inspection should match the recommendation to the observed problem.

Is an exterior system always better?

Feasibility depends on access, elevation, source, construction, and discharge. A useful comparison describes what each option can accomplish at your property.
